Dr. Francisco Rojas Aravena 2013-2018.

Dr. Francisco Rojas Aravena is the Rector of the university for the period of 2013-2018. The decision was made during the twenty-third meeting of the Council conducted on Friday 27th June, 2013.

Francisco Rojas Aravena, born in Chile, holds a PhD in Political Science from the University of Utrecht (Netherlands) and a MS in Political Science from the Latin American Faculty of Social Sciences (FLACSO). He specializes in international relations, human security, regional integration, Latin American political systems, negotiations (theory and practice), and international security and defense.

Before being elected to the position, he served as Secretary General of FLACSO from 2004-2012.
He has written or edited more than 80 books, written chapters in over 100 books, and published 138 articles in academic journals.

In his capacity as Rector of the University for Peace, Dr. Francisco Rojas Aravena plans to strengthen andexpand the university’s relations with the United Nations system and its agencies in Costa Rica, foster a close relationship between teaching and research, generate innovative ideas on “new threats to peace”, and reinforce existing connections with institutions in The Hague and Geneva.
