Admission Guideline 

HUFS-UPEACE Dual Master’s Program – Admission

This combined programme is offered by the University for Peace (UPEACE) and the Hankuk University of Foreign Studies (HUFS) - specifically the Graduate School of International and Area Studies (GSAIS) at HUFS.

The application process for this dual degree programme is faciliated by HUFS.  If the applicant is admitted to HUFS, a UPEACE application would be required at a later time. The following information is for applicant reference, however all applications will be initiated on the HUFS website.

Who is qualified to apply for this programme?

  • Applicants who have obtained (or will have obtained prior to the start of the programme) a bachelor's degree or equivalent (Admission is open to all undergraduate majors)
  • Applicants with a high level of English proficiency.
    • Students from countries where English is the official language do not require proof of English proficiency.
    • English proficiency exams and the minimum scores accepted:
      • IELTS -  7
      • TOEFL PBT - 530
      • TOEFL CBT - 215
      • TOEFL IBT - 90
    • To waive the English language proficiency test report requirements, applicants from non-English speaking countries may present one of the following documents:
      • Undergraduate degree and from an English speaking university
      • Letter from a higher education institution certifying enrollment or completion of a programme by the applicant stating that the medium of instruction was English
  • Special consideration will be given to applicants with previous experiences in peace-related activities.

* UPEACE Phone interview (if required) schedule will be individually informed by the GSIAS Office. 

*Overseas applicants who cannot travel to Korea for the face-to face interview and the writing exam can request an alternate tele-(or video conference) interview.

  • Applicants should fill in the application form online and print to include with other required hard copy documents
  • Gather hard copies of the following documents
    • Official undergraduate (bachelor's) certificate/diploma (+ official** translation to English of original is not in English)
    • Official undergraduate (bachelor's) transcript (+ official** translation to English of original is not in English)
    • CV
    • Statement of Purpose
    • Letter of Recommendation (in English)
      • Must include referee's signature and be written on HUFS official letter form.
      • Letter must be sealed with the referees signature on the deal of the envelope
    • Official English proficiency exam report

** Official translation certified by a consular officer, licensed translator, or other official body.

Submission by mail must be registered and arrive by the due date

Programme Benefits

Scholarships at HUFS

Students who show outstanding academic potential can receive full / half / partial tuition scholarships (Full-tuition: three students per semester; Half-tuition: three students per semester; partial tuition: all other students) and excellent international students can receive half tuition scholarship. Those who are selected as assistants in the research centers or faculty offices receive assistantship scholarship.

  • Scholarship awards are not cumulative.
  • Please note that HUFS scholarships are provided in the middle of each semester, so students are required to pay full tuition and admission fees in advance before each semester starts.

Scholarships at UPEACE

Scholarship while studying at UPEACE: Full or partial tuition (30%) waiver will be granted to all HUFS-UPEACE Dual Master’s Students. (One full-tuition waiver based on merit is available for each group of six incoming students; all others will receive 30% based on UPEACE-HUFS partner agreement)

Preparation Program

GSIAS runs a preparation program for entering students in order to provide them with basic knowledge on politics, economics, society and culture, and international studies before the first semester starts.

Special Lecture Series

GSIAS invites former and current Ambassadors of Foreign Missions in Korea and other eminent people in order to expose its students to a wide diversity of current affairs.
