New Leadership at the University for Peace Reaffirms Commitment to Dialogue and Institutional Stability
San José, Costa Rica, 20 October 2026. Dr. Juan Carlos Sainz-Borgo has assumed the duties of Acting Rector of the University for Peace (UPEACE) as of 19 October, following the decision of Dr. Francisco Rojas-Aravena to step down from his responsibilities as Rector. Dr. Rojas-Aravena will remain involved in the transition process until his resignation takes effect on 31 October.
On Tuesday, Dr. Sainz-Borgo met with representatives of the student body, alongside other stakeholders including alumni, faculty, and staff, in what he called the first of a series of meetings intended to address concerns raised by the university community and identify possible steps forward.
The discussion focused on a series of demands presented by students through an online petition and subsequent communications, which covered a range of topics, including university leadership, decisions affecting the students’ academic experience, and student and alumni participation in the university’s decision-making, among others. Participants reviewed the issues raised, exchanged perspectives, and collectively agreed to establish several working committees to examine specific issues raised in the petition.
During the meeting, Dr. Sainz-Borgo acknowledged the student-led movement and expressed his interest in ensuring that all views are taken into account in decisions concerning the University’s future. He also emphasized his commitment, alongside faculty and staff, to a UPEACE that remains true to its mission and the principles on which it was founded.
The meeting is expected to be the first of several opportunities for the university community to participate in discussions over the coming months. The UPEACE Ombudsperson will accompany the process to help ensure that the rights and interests of all parties are respected and protected.
The University for Peace remains committed to working closely with its community to address the concerns raised, maintain institutional stability and continuity, and further strengthen the academic quality of its programmes and its founding mission.
